Recently, 12 mothers holding their babies came for medical treatment at the inpatient wards of the Pediatric Surgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The children were all diagnosed with congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM).

"Congenital pulmonary airway malformations cannot be ignored," said Li Peng, Director of Pediatric Surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. "Mild cases may not have any clinical manifestations, and the pregnant mother may not feel anything, while severe cases may affect the heart, lungs and brain of the fetus and endanger life."

In order to help patients and their families gain a better understanding of the disease, Li Peng's team collected the clinical data of every case, adopted retrospective and prospective research methods simultaneously, completed the fetus phase risk factor prediction and treatment strategy research of fetal CPAM, and established a complete set of theoretical systems.

At present, Li Peng's team has established a theoretical system of prenatal risk classification and diagnosis and treatment opportunity of CPAM, and the relationship between diagnosis and treatment methods and prognosis. The team also conducted in-depth research on minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment model for severe congenital lung disease, potential mechanism of the malignant degeneration of congenital lung malformation, and pathogenesis of congenital pulmonary dysplasia, aiming to lead the related research in this field for further development with wider coverage.
